Current Work

At some point stipple became to time consuming to be practical in the marketplace with
its ever faster turn around time. Deadlines that used to be several weeks were now several
days from start to finish. Just not doable! So for quite a while now my commissioned
work has been produced as graphite or ink wash drawings modified in Photoshop.

"Black Night Is Fallin'" for the annual Blind Willie McTell Blues Festival
in Thomson Georgia.

"Off The Top" was inspired by a trip to central Kentucky where there was a lot of
strip mining and poverty right next door to horse farms and wealth.

I was invited to do "The Web Spinner" as part of an exquisite corpse for an online
literary site.

"Don't You Talk To Me" was another in a series of images for The Blind Willie McTell
Blues Festival in Thomson Georgia.

This was a graphite drawing featuring "Trombone Shorty," the festival headliner.
Type design on all these posters was by Julie Spivey.

"Frank" was done for the annual "Schlocktoberfest Film Festival"
in Athens Georgia. It was then purchased and put by the front door of a
psychologists office as a protective spirit. {!}

Initially I did "Baby Please" as a graphite drawing that was scanned and colored
in Photoshop, as usual. This was also for The Blind Willie Festival.

"French Kiss Off" was an ink wash drawing done in response to the events on 9/11.

"Hairyman Meets Tailybone" was a cover for a spoken word album
by David Holt of spooky kids stories.

"Mavis" was a Blind Willie poster celebrating Mavis Staples and the
Staples Singers contributions to the civil rights movement in the 1960's.

"Neutral Observers" was a commentary on the deplorable behavior of UN
Observers in war torn Africa

"Cash" The Man in Black was just a personal piece.

"Winfield Scott and The Georgia Songbirds" is a mashup of a couple
topics that interest me... the Civil War and bird painting.

A regional art center in Georgia had an invitational show celebrating the
glories of the cow. What could be more glorious than "Babe" the Blue Ox.
The head for this ink wash drawing was modeled after Freckles, an enormous
Texas Longhorn steer that lived near us at the University of Georgia.

"Changing Colors" was a comment about voters who just can't seem to decide.

DARPA is always, always watching.

"Stanley" and "Son of Stanley." Some of my favorite projects were "The Home Show"
birdhouse auctions for Habitat for Humanity in Georgia.  These characters were the
mascots for the first and second events respectively.

"Baby Please Don't Go." Just one more ink wash from Blind Willie.

"Yellow Dog Democrat" for a book cover on Georgia politics.

President Buchanan was believed to have been a real lush, so he seemed like
a good subject for a wine label. This was done for a design magazine as a
demonstration piece about Photoshop techniques.

Poster image for a Blues and BBQ event in my hometown.

Sketching the workers on the new parking deck at UGA.

I like doing watercolors of birds. These were done for a variety of clients.

Blind Willie McTell was one of the greatest Piedmont Style guitarists.
He used to play at the Thomson Georgia train depot for tips.

Two poster images from the Robert Osborne Classic Film Festival
held annually in Athens Georgia. This event went on for seven years
before being supplanted by the TCM Classic Film Festival in Hollywood.
Good Times!

Sketches and final bronze casting of the Jack Davis Award presented
to the speakers at the University of Georgia’s annual
Jack Davis Distinguished Visiting Artist Lecture.

“Dinner At Ron's.” A collaboration with ceramic artist Andy Nasisse.
